Contemporary Muslim Piety
Contemporary Muslim Piety is an interdisciplinary research group at the Department of Cross-Cultural and Regional Studies with broad international research cooperation within the study of religion, anthropology, history and area studies.
The research group was formed in the spring of 2021 and its members share research interests in Muslim piety, devotion and everyday religiosity as expressed in theological thinking, interpretations and ritual practices, as well as in visual and spatial manifestations. The researchers bring a special focus to transformation processes, hybrid forms of expression and contemporary understandings of normative traditions. The themes covered by the research group are not regionally limited but, rather, address Muslim piety practices across the globe, showing a keen interest in religious and cultural entanglements between local communities.
Based on its joint international contacts, the ambition of the research group is to organize guest-lectures, workshops and conferences where new empirical material on the broad theme of contemporary Muslim piety can be presented, along with discussions about methodological challenges and theoretical issues.
In recent semesters the following conferences have been organized by Contemporary Muslim Piety
December 2021
August 2022
