Ottoman Times in Prime Time: Representations of the Ottoman Legacy in Greek Television Fiction

Seminar with Georgia Aitaki, PhD candidate in Film Studies, University of Gothenburg

This seminar aims at providing an overview of the ways that issues and events related to the Ottoman legacy have been portrayed in Greek television fiction. We will study the variety of fashions that a certain historical period is represented in popular cultural forms and the socio-cultural/ideological significance of these representations; we will examine the specificity of different genres (adaptation, drama, comedy); and we will evaluate issues regarding their critical and popular reception.

Students will be provided with viewing and reading material before the seminar in order to facilitate discussion in the classroom.
